Accessibility
We want every customer to be able to browse our pieces, buy from us and book time with us on this website, whatever device or assistive technology they use. If anything here is in your way, call us on 505 265 7170 and a person will help.
What this site is built to
This website is built to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the current version of the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act guidance for websites, and it meets a number of the guidelines' level AAA criteria as well, listed below. We measure it against the standard as we build, on every page type, at desk and phone widths, and again with each of the accessibility options on this page switched on, so the site is as usable with them as without.
What that means in practice
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing a keyboard reaches on every page, and whatever you move to is shown in full, never hidden under the header.
- Text meets the AA contrast minimum against its background, measured, not assumed. With the High contrast option on, every text colour on the site meets the AAA minimum of 7:1.
- Everything you can tap or click is at least 44 by 44 pixels, the AAA target size, on every device.
- Text is set in scalable units, so your browser's zoom and text-size settings work, and the page reflows rather than scrolling sideways.
- Every photograph of a piece carries a text description, and decorative images are marked so screen readers skip them.
- Every section has a heading, every link says where it goes, and nothing on the site moves or animates on its own.
- The trade shorthand in our piece names, such as 14k, ctw and mm, is expanded on the piece's page and explained in the glossary, along with the words themselves.
- Motion respects your system's reduce-motion setting, and the site follows your system's high-contrast setting.
- Your browser's own tools work here: zoom, reader mode, translation into your language, and reading the page aloud.
- The site works without JavaScript for browsing, product pages, and reaching us; where a feature genuinely needs it, the page says so rather than sitting blank.
The AAA criteria this site meets
Level AAA is not intended as a standard for whole websites, and we do not claim it as one. Of its criteria, these are met and measured here: contrast (enhanced) with the High contrast option on; target size (enhanced); focus not obscured (enhanced); section headings; link purpose from the link text alone; unusual words and abbreviations, through the glossary; animation from interactions; and accessible authentication, since signing in asks only for a code sent to your email.
Known limitations
Two parts of the site are provided by our commerce platform, Lightspeed, rather than built by us:
- The sign-in and account area (orders and favourites) is Lightspeed's own component, shown inside our page. We have styled it to match, but its behaviour with assistive technology is theirs.
- The checkout and payment steps are Lightspeed's own pages, shown inside ours. Their time limits, error messages and help text are theirs, and the AAA criteria about those are not ours to meet.
If either gives you trouble, call us. We can take an order, look up your history or hold a piece for you over the phone, the way we have since 1988.
Tell us
We would rather hear about a problem than have you leave. Call 505 265 7170 during shop hours, or email oohaahabq@gmail.com with the page address and what happened. We fix what we can fix, and we tell you when we have.
