Summer Babies: June Birthstones

June is extra special because this month there are not one but three birthstones! Pearls, moonstone, and alexandrite can all represent a June birthday.

Pearls are a unique stone--they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. A small fragment of rock, a sand grain, or a parasite enters an oyster or clam's shell and starts the process of creating a pearl. It irritates the oyster who responds by coating the foreign material with layer upon layer of shell material.

Pearls formed on the inside of the shell are usually irregular in shape and have little commercial value. Pearls formed inside the tissue of the oyster are either round or pear-shaped and are highly sought after for jewelry. White is perhaps the best-known and most common color but pearls also come in delicate shades of black, cream, gray, blue, yellow, lavender, green, and mauve!

Alexandrite is an uncommon and beautiful stone that can change color depending on the lighting. In daylight it appears green, sometimes with a bluish cast or a brownish tint. However, under artificial lighting the stone turns reddish-violet or purple. Sri Lanka is the main source of alexandrite today, and the stones have also been found in Brazil, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and Myanmar (Burma).

Alexandrite is expensive because of its rarity and was first discovered in Russia in 1831 during the reign of its namesake Czar Alexander II. We love this stone in engagement rings!

Moonstones are believed to be named for the bluish white spots within them that project a silvery play of color very much like moonlight when held up to the light. When the stone is moved back and forth, the brilliant silvery rays appear to move about, like moonbeams playing over water.

Moonstones can vary in color, with some being almost white and others being very fiery and blue. Moonstones are said to bring peace, calm, and balance and represent the energy of the moon itself. Its beautiful inner glow is eye catching and unique.
