Did you know we can design not just engagement rings but custom wedding bands as well? Sara and Dan, this month's featured couple, were seeking a wedding band that would be a standalone piece rather than a matched set with her engagement ring. Sara wanted a wider band with a natural, non-traditional style that looks great on its own.
Starting with a sketch, we designed a beautiful organic-textured ring for Sara that is made of three narrow bands that meet on the underside. This design gives her 8mm wide ring a light, open feel. The three bands give it a stacked look while keeping it simple with a single ring. Round diamonds are hammer-set into the bands and are spaced out so that each band is a little different.
Some styles of rings can be handmade by our jeweler instead of using a CAD model. What this means it that the jeweler hand-carves the wax model used for casting rather than using a wax model created by 3D software. We chose to hand-carve Sara's band to create a tree branch-like texture in the metal and give the ring a handmade look. 14k Rose gold gives the ring a warm, rustic style with a contemporary twist.
Dan chose a timeless plain band with a brushed finish in Cobalt metal, which is hypoallergenic, scratch-resistant, and shatter-proof. Cobalt is also great because its color is the closest to white gold out of all the alternative metals (tungsten, titanium, etc.) and it has a long-lasting luster.
How did you choose your engagement ring and/or wedding bands? Tell us about the process of finding and/or designing your rings and about your experience at Ooh! Aah! Jewelry.
My engagement ring is an incredible family heirloom, made in the 1930s and absolutely beautiful. It is such a statement piece that I knew it would be hard to match a wedding band with it. I decided that I wanted a wedding band for everyday use that could easily be worn on its own. I wanted something unique, with an earthy texture and just a bit of sparkle.
Ooh! Ahh! was the perfect place to design this ring. They worked with me on design, let me try many examples, helped keep the ring within my budget and made the entire process easy and fun. When we needed a wedding band for my husband, we knew where to go. He isn't much of a "jewelry guy" and the women at Ooh! Ahh! were patient and kind, and helped him to find a great (and durable) ring. We were both so impressed with the knowledge, experience and customer service.
What is your advice for others who are looking for their rings?
Get creative! This is something that you will have forever and wear everyday. Make sure at you love it and that it fits your style and lifestyle.
How did your significant other propose?
At a picnic.
Tell us about a little bit about your wedding day? Who was your photographer, florist, hair stylist, makeup artist and venue?
We were married in August of 2012 at Pastures of Plenty Farm outside Boulder, CO. We used the absolutely incredible Michele Hart for photography, Stephanie Clark with Lale Floral Designs for flowers, Bliss Elevated as our wedding planner, makeup and hair for the bridal party was at On Broadway Spa in Boulder.
Congratulations Sara and Dan!
