Did you know April's birthstone is a diamond? Brush up on your diamond terminology and learn more about what makes each stone unique! We can help demystify the 4 C's of diamonds that affect the quality and value of a stone.
Clarity refers to whether a stone has any natural imperfections, called inclusions. The clarity of a stone is graded on a scale beginning with Flawless (FL), which indicates that no inclusions are visible under 10x magnification.
Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2) means that inclusions are minute and extremely difficult to locate under magnification. Very Slightly Included (VS1, VS2) means inclusions are minor and difficult to locate under magnification. Slightly Included (SI1, SI2) means inclusions are noticeable and are relatively easy to locate under magnification. Imperfect (I1, I2, I3) indicates the stone has inclusions are visible to the naked eye.
Diamonds are also graded on a scale for Color. The less color found in a diamond the higher the letter grade, beginning with Colorless (D-F color). Next is Near Colorless (G-J color), Faint Yellow (K-M color), Very Light Yellow (N-QR), and finally Light Yellow (ST-YZ)
The term Shape describes the form (Round, Oval, Princess, etc.) of the diamond usually seen from above. Each shape has its own cutting specifications and unique attributes.
The Cut of the diamond refers to the proportions of the stone and will affect the amount of sparkle it has. Each stone is evaluated based on a variety of technical criteria and the three most common cuts are Deep Cut, Shallow Cut and Ideal Cut. A stone with an Ideal Cut will have the most fire and brilliance.
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond. Multiple stones of the same carat weight can appear larger or smaller depending on their shape and cut.
